Sam has a collection of 38 bean bag animals. She collects bears, cats, dogs and bunnies. Use these clues to find out how many of each time she owns:

She has twice as many cats as dogs
She has three times as many cats as bunnies
She has four times as many bears as bunnies.

How many of each does she have?

You first have to realize that she has less bunnies than anything else because the number of cats is 3 times the bunnies and only 2 times the dogs. So:

bunnies = x
Then using the rest of the information you can assign a label to the other animals

bunnies =x
cats = 3x
dogs = 3x/2
bears = 4x

Now the sum of all of these is 38

x+3x+3x/2+4x = 38

Combine what you can x+3x+4x=8x

so: 8x+3x/2=38

I would now give 8x a denominator of 2 instead of 1

8x/1=16x/2

Thus: 16x/2+3x/2 is 19x/2.

Now 19x/2=38

19x=38*2=76
x=76/19
x=4. So the bunnies are 4, the cats are 12, the dogs are 6, and the bears are 16. The sum of all of these is 38.
