Attention Publix shoppers: Go to Walmart!

That's the essence of a new Walmart advertising campaign that challenges
Publix shoppers to compare prices at Walmart. The ad suggests that Publix
shoppers will pay less for the same items if they purchase them at Walmart.

For the most part, that's true. Local 6 previously conducted a price
comparison survey that showed Walmart typically beat the Lakeland-based
supermarket chain on regular priced items. However, coupons and Buy One Get
One Free offers at Publix skew that comparison considerably.

"When I buy stuff, I buy it on sale, in bulk, in coupons, and it comes out to
be a wash," says Wendy Cooper, a loyal Publix shopper.

Cooper (no relation to the consumer editor writing this article) agreed to
take the Walmart challenge even though she normally avoids shopping there.

"I don't like the customer service. I don't like the feel of the store," she
said.

She concedes that a few of the items she purchased at Walmart were priced
lower than the same items at Publix, but she's not impressed. She told Local 6
that she's mastered the art of the BOGO deals at Publix by stockpiling items
