Keith Urban, Grand Ole Opry Invitation: Singer Gets an All for the Hall Surprise (The Boot)

On April 21, Keith Urban will become the latest member of the Grand Ole Opry.
The country superstar received a surprise invitation to join the coveted
country institution in front of about 16,000 people Tuesday night (April 10).

The Opry honor came in the form of a black duffle bag brought on stage at
Keith's annual All for the Hall benefit show at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena.
His co-host for the evening, Vince Gill, called the members of Rascal Flatts,
Diamond Rio and the Oak Ridge Boys -- all of whom had just performed two-song
sets -- back onto the stage to give Keith the special present. Visibly
confused, the "For You" singer unzipped the bag to find a WSM/Grand Ole Opry
microphone stand.

"I'm shocked," Keith said, after Vince gave the official Opry invitation to
his friend. "What a huge honor and how beautiful to have this happen tonight!

What are things to put in a small bug out bag (urban survival)?

i have a jansport backpack.

For urban survival you generally assume you're not going to have a great need for hunting, trapping, fishing, making fire or purifying mass amounts of water. This might be necessary after a couple of days if you have to leave the city, but you're probably not going to need to trap, skin and cook squirrels or pigeons to survive in the city, even after a major disaster.

This is what I carry in my messenger bag with my laptop and office stuff:

* 5 days worth of my prescription meds, along with a laminated card describing each med, dosage instructions, and why I need it.
* Medic alert necklace (worn)
* $100 cash in small bills, plus $2 in quarters (above and beyond what's in my wallet)
* Extra ATM and Credit Card
* MetroCard with 4 or 5 fares balance
* Street map of the city and a small compass
* Emergency contacts card including Doctor, local and out-of-state family/friends
+ Color copy of passport ID page, color copy of driver's license
* Small first aid kit with a Celox or QuickClot and a bandanna
* Advil, Aspirin, Pepcid Complete, Immodium anti-diarrhea tablets
* Psuedofed (original formula, decongestant or to help stay awake)
* Change of underwear
+ Medium-weight thermal base layer (long johns), top and bottom
* 2 pairs of thick socks

* Small sewing kit with needles, thread, shirt buttons and safety pins
* Leatherman Micra Multi-Tool (on key-ring)

* ResQMe tool (to cut seat belts and break windows)

* Hand disinfectant lotion (small bottle)
* Chemical hand and foot warmer packets
* Small can of pepper spray (in a pocket attached to the bag's strap)

* Extra AAA batteries for lights (Eveready Lithium)
* Sharpie Marker and 3x3-inch Post-It pad

Probably some of that stuff isn't really essential. The stuff marked "+" can probably be skipped, even though I think it's useful. A lot of this stuff I use for every-day emergencies, such as the rain pants and poncho when it was pouring rain this weekend and I parked 1/2 mile from the office. Even during 9/11 I could walk 20 minutes from Wall Street and find an open Bodega to get water and food. It took most of the day but I eventually got home (65 miles away) the same day. Transit strikes and widespread blackouts can make it more difficult to get out of the city, but I still can't imagine it taking more than a day. The only thing I can imagine worse than 9/11 would be a nuclear or chemical attack, and I don't know how to reasonably prepare for that in any way I could carry with me to work.
