I do not understand Barbara Neff's logic regarding not spaying to prevent (not
kill) pine beetles from infesting trees on her property, unless she owns a
forest. When the infestation started in the high mountains (Grand Lake to
Fraser area), I consulted with the CSU extension service for advice on an
approved deterrent chemical for beetles. We sprayed for five years. We heard
many stories of why you cannot protect the forest from beetles once the forest
has drought-impacted distressed trees. That has been true. However, you can
survey our neighborhood and quiet easily determine which homeowners sprayed
and who did not. The HOA associations that develop a plan to deter pine
beetles from attacking trees on private property are being prudent and are
protecting the values of the housing area.
