Snails suddenly dying in fish tank?

Hi, I have a 10 gallon fish tank with 3 guppies, 1 betta, 1 large snail, and that snails offspring (about 30-40 small snails), one of which is a 'medium' sized snail. The babies have been in there for maybe 3 weeks now.

My question concerns this: I looked at the tank 2 or 3 days ago and noticed that my medium-sized snail, lets call him Junior, was hanging halfway out of his shell, and that many of the baby snails were either floating or noticeably dead.

Is there something that could have gone awfully wrong and killed all of these snails? Or were there just too many in the tank? They all seemed healthy- flocking to algae pellets in mass numbers, crawling everywhere around the tank. There was an old snail clutch shell sitting at the bottom of the tank that a lot of them were eating, that wouldn't have caused any problems, would it?

I'm just concerned for the rest of my fish and my old snail, I would like to avoid any unnecessary passings if possible. Thanks!

The most common method of snail euthanasia is copper or other heavy metals in the water. Back in the day when our snail populations would become a burden we would add a penny to the tank and when enough snails had died we'd remove it. The thing that we didn't think of was that the copper would also kill some of the beneficial bacteria colonies just when there was an inevitable ammonia spike brewing. It's a wonder any of our fish survived.
