security deposit from landlord?

i sent a letter in via certified mail, stating that i was not re-renting my unit the following year, and not renewing my lease. i gave the required 60 days notice, and received a green signature slip which verifies they have my letter. i unfortunately misplaced this green slip, and they are now claiming they never got my letter. i know for a fact they did, i just have no proof since i lost that paper. they are charging my roommate and i our security deposit as well as every month's rent up until the unit is re-rented.

i tried calling the post office to track the slip, however without a tracking number, there is nothing they can do. the apartment is a complete disgrace, with leaking ceilings, dysfunctional plumbing, and on one occasion, my roommates ceiling even caved in. they refuse to do any repairs to the property to help it get re-rented.

any suggestions on other steps i can take? what are my options?

With no proof there is not much you can do. All you could do would be to fight it in court. With out that receipt you have a landlord says tenant says case. It all depends on who the judge believes.

If you had not given proper notice not to renew then the fees and charges would all be legal.

Any lack of repair or other issues before this have nothing to do with it and are completely immaterial.
