What material for ground in chicken pen?

This was my 1st winter w/ my 3 hens. The ground kept freezing behind the door and it was impossible to open it more than about 12 or so inches to squueze in. Once in, I could care for them but cleaning out there house was impossible since I couldn't shovel out the door. I kept pulling the straw out onto the ground. Now spring is here. I shoveled so much stinky stuff out but there is still a nice thick layer of matted straw on the ground (looks like reg dirt). It stinks so bad!! I am wondering after shoveling it all out, what I can put in the bottom of the pen to make it easy for me to rake up poo throughout the summer and into the winter. Sand? Pea Gravel? When it rains, their eggs are very dirty also b/c of this messy ground so it can't be too good for them to be walking around - any advice?

Straw or better yet...........pine or cedar mulch........
