How to remove the smell from tanned reptile leather?

3 years ago i tanned some iguana skins, ever since then i haven't managed to remove the smell. I performed the entire tanning process; glycerin, salt, etc... But 3-YEARS later, i still cant figure out how to remove the horrible odor. I was told to place them in a ziplock with baking soda, and leave it sealed for an entire week, but won't that ruin the leather??? Vinegar was also mentioned, but wont that destroy the hide as well??

A taxidermist showed me a couple of ways to remove odors from tanned hides. One method is really simple, you use fresh ground coffee or instant coffee and mix it strong ‘John Wayne style coffee’ then wash the back of the hide thoroughly letting it soak in. Rub as dry as you can with dry cloth. After it dries its scent free. This also gives it a slight brown color.
Another method is fabric softener used in washing machines. Spray some over the surface and rub in with a brush or rag. And then wipe off with dry rag.
Another is to mix 5 parts water with 1 part vinegar and spray the back of the hide. Again dry off with dry rag.

The baking soda/borax method requires you cover the flesh side of the hide, rub in it with a brush, spread some more over it and let it sit for 24 hours to draw out the smell. You can use straight baking soda or borax or a mixture of both.

No matter what method you use when the pelt is dry go over it with a leather preservative. Next time you tan them use borax and it wont get that smell.

Almost forgot another way. Buy a spray bottle of liquid descenter used by hunters to cover their scent and spray the back of the pelt. This will remove the odor but if the hide wasnt tanned with borax it could come back.
