What's the best defense against getting pickpocketed when visiting Europe?

My friend has one of those shoulder wallets but It just seems like such a pain to me to have to wear that under my shirt. Any other ideas?

There's a whole show on pickpocketing that we watched in my German class since we are going to Europe this summer. She taped it from the travel channel, so keep an eye out for that if you have TC. A few things they suggested was wearing your backpacks on the front. Or using breadties to tie the two zippers together on your backpack/bag/purse, although they are amazing pickpockets, I think most people would feel tugging at their bag if there were bread ties. If you are going to be wearing pants, you always have the option to put everything in your sock. (I do this at concerts). Also, keep track put keep everything in different places, that way if they DO happen to pickpocket you, they won't get everything, or it will take them longer to find something worth their time.
