Transitioning from bottle to cup?

My son is coming up on six months old. I'd like to avoid sippy cups altogether if possible (I'm okay with one of those non-spill straw top cups though) and am looking for advice on types of cups to use, techniques, etc. I have plenty of time (I'm a stay-at-home mom and he is my only child) and patience and am not worried about the mess factor. What has worked/not worked for other people?

That's great that you are trying to skip the sippy cup altogether. They are way overused and unneccessary. I liked the Take and Toss straw cups because they are most like what an adult woudl use at a restaurant. I didn't use the rigid straw they came with. I found it was easier for her to drink from if she used a bendable straw. When we were out and about I got the cheapest straw cup I could find at BRU. They come two to a pack and the straw doesn't have a valve. For teaching how to use an open cup we used small bathroom size Dixie cups. The ones we used were opaque and we could see the liquid and make sure she was actually getting somethign to drink. Its small so its easy to hold and it doesn't hold a lot so if it spills, oh well.
