Stop, Thief! Feds Make Stolen Phones Worthless (Mobiledia)

The Federal Communications Commission intends to crack down on the cell phone
Black Market, working with carriers to create a proposed database to help
disable lost or stolen phones.

The database will let carriers track phones and cut off voice and data service
by using identification numbers unique to every phone. Cell carriers would
disable a phone using the International Mobile Equipment Identity, instead of
just disabling the SIM card, which thieves can replace. Major carriers
including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint support the initiative, which
mirrors a similar system in Europe.

In addition to the database, a federal bill proposed by New York's Sen. Chuck
Schumer would make it a federal crime to tamper with the identification
number, adding an additional safeguard to the system if criminals find a way
around it.

"Our goal is to make a stolen cellphone as worthless as an empty wallet," said
New York's Sen. Chuck Schumer. "By permanently disabling stolen cellphones, we
can take away the incentive to steal a cellphone in the first place and put a
serious dent in the growing rates of iPhone and smartphone theft."
