Re-colouring stone fireplace - can it be done?

We have moved into a house with a composite portland stone fireplace. My wife doesn't feel it is right and wants a warmer colour in the room - either a wood or maybe a warmer stone like sandstone.

This fireplace will have an inset woodburner in it and needs to withstand the heat. Is there any way to recolour what we have got, or does it require rip-out and replace?

You can use dilute emulsion paint in a cream colour to tint up the Portland Stone to change the look of it.

My own view is that stone fireplaces are naff, so would be sorely tempted to bite the bullet and trash it - which will probably improve the value of the house into the bargain.
